Hillary Rodham Clinton is an American politician and diplomat who served as the 67th United States Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013, as a United States Senator from New York from 2001 to 2009, and as First Lady of the United States as the wife of President Bill Clinton from 1993 to 2001.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Hillary Rodham was the daughter of Hugh Ellsworth Rodham and Dorothy Emma Howell. She attended Wellesley College, where she was elected senior class president and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in political science. She enrolled at Yale Law School, where she met Bill Clinton, and they were married in 1975. After graduating from Yale, she moved to Arkansas and became a faculty member at the University of Arkansas Fayetteville School of Law.
In 1977, Hillary Rodham co-founded Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families, a non-profit organization. In 1978, her husband was elected 50th Governor of Arkansas, and she was named the first female chair of the Legal Services Corporation in 1978. As First Lady of Arkansas, she led a task force whose recommendations helped reform Arkansas's education system. She was also the first First Lady to hold a law degree and to have a professional career after marriage.
As First Lady of the United States, Clinton focused on health care reform and children's issues. In 1997, she helped create the State Children's Health Insurance Program, the Adoption and Safe Families Act, and the Foster Care Independence Act. She advocated for the passage of the Balanced Budget Act, the State Children's Health Insurance Program, the Foster Care Independence Act, and the Adoption and Safe Families Act.
After moving to New York, Clinton was elected as the first female Senator from New York in 2000. She served two terms, from January 2001 to January 2009. During her tenure, she advocated for the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and worked to provide health care for first responders who were sickened by toxins at the World Trade Center site. She also helped secure over $20 billion in federal aid for her state.
After being appointed Secretary of State in 2009, Clinton traveled to more countries than any previous Secretary of State. As Secretary, she advocated the use of "smart power", which combined diplomatic, economic, military, political, legal and cultural means to influence other countries. She played a central role in the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya. She pressed for the rights of women and girls worldwide and established the Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review.
After stepping down as Secretary of State, Clinton was considered the front-runner for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination. She was formally nominated as the Democratic Party's candidate for President of the United States at the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Clinton lost the election to Donald Trump, but received nearly 3 million more votes than Trump in the popular vote. Since then, she has remained an active public figure, continuing to speak out on issues of domestic and global concern.
